If you are looking a good quality car on a longish term  basis but want to keep the costs to a minimum, buying with a guaranteed buyback might be your best option.  I will sell you a car and, if you want, when you are ready to leave you sell it back to me at a pre-arranged price.

The only condition to the buyback is that the vehicle is in approximately the same condition as when I sold it. You are, however, free to sell it to anyone else if you can get a better price.

See below for typical cars available right now.

Vehicle Preparation

Before a vehicle is handed over it is given a complete mechanical check. Any faults found that are critical to the safe and reliable operation of the vehicle are fixed. It is then given a complete service - oil change, new oil filter, new spark plugs, new distributor points, new air filter, etc. Finally it is tuned and set up to run efficiently and reliably.

Premium class vehicles.  These are a higher grade of car and they come with a higher quality preparation. They are 1997 to 2000 models with less than 90,000km on the odometer. They are often freshly imported - you will be the first owner.   If it's an automatic, the transmission system will have been checked and serviced by Bakerfield Automatics.  If it's a diesel the engine will have been checked and serviced by Morrison Diesels. Both are top-class experts in their field.  It is then given an independent check by the AA and you will be able to see their report to reassure yourself that the vehicle is in good mechanical condition.

Backpacker vehicles. 1994-96 models with higher kms but still in good working order. They will have been serviced and checked and you will be given a copy of the checksheet to reassure yourself that the vehicle is in good mechanical condition.

Economy backpacker vehicles. In addition to the above vehicles we have a limited number of older (late 80s to early 90s) vehicles. Showing their age, but mechanically still sound and well maintained.  They have been thoroughly checked and serviced in our workshop and are ready for the road.

Warranties

Premium vehicles: A 30 day warranty is given with all vehicles sold. This covers all mechanical breakdowns with the exception of damage caused by negligence or misuse of the vehicle.

Backpacker  vehicles: A 14 day warranty is given with all vehicles sold. This covers all mechanical breakdowns with the exception of damage caused by negligence or misuse of the vehicle. This warranty also applies to Economy Backpacker vehicles.

Extended warranty: If you wish you can then extend the above warranty for a further two months.  If you are a member of AA  or a related overseas motoring organisation the extended warranty will cost $2 a day.  If you are not a member of a motoring organisation like AA the cost is $3 a day.  On Backpacker vehicles there is there an excess (deductible) of $200 - in other words you must pay the first $200 of any repair.  The aim of this extended warranty is to protect you against major expensive repairs. No excess applies on Premium grade cars.

Breakdown Cover

If you do not have emergency breakdown cover - for roadside assistance -  through membership of AA or a similar organisation at home, we can provide cover for $1 a day.

Insurance

Insurance is not mandatory in this country - you may drive without it. You may arrange for insurance cover yourself - but we can arrange insurance cover for you.  Cheapest option is "third party only"  which covers damage to anything you hit. "Third party, fire, and theft"  protects you against damage to any other vehicle, or the theft or burning of your car.  Or you can have comprehensive insurance that protects your vehicle and anything else you damage.

Third party only

Age of youngest driver:

3 months cover

6 months cover
18 to 21 $227.50 $255.63
22 to 24 $216.25 $250.00
25 and over $205.00 $227.50

The excess in each case is $500.  You can also include cover against fire and theft on your own vehicle  for an additional $50. Please contact us for further details.

Comprehensive Insurance

In addition to third-party only you can extend your insurance to cover damage to your own vehicle.  There are two options:

Buyback value:  Under this arrangement you are covered for up to the full amount of the agreed buyback price where damage is the result of a collision with another vehicle. Single vehicle crashes have an excess of $1500.  Note: You are still liable for the $500 excess on any third party claim.

Full purchase price value:  Under this arrangement you can claim up to the amount of the original purchase price. Excess on multi-vehicle crashes $500.  Excess on single vehicle crashes $1500.

Costs are given in $NZ per day.  Note:  These costs are in addition to the third party cover described above.

Age of youngest driver: Vehicles up to $6000 $6000-$10,000 $10,000 Plus
Buyback Full Buyback only Full Buyback only Full
18-21 years $2 $4 $4 $6 $6 $8
22-24 years $1.50 $3 $3 $4.50 $5 $7
25 years plus $1 $2 $2 $3 $4 $6

Warrant of Fitness And Registration

For any car to be street legal, it must have a Warrant of Fitness (WOF) - a Government quality-assured safety test. It is one of the most rigorous safety tests in the world and  must be passed every six months. In addition all vehicles must be registered - i.e. pay the government another dollop of tax. All my vehicles are delivered with a recent warrant of fitness and are registered.

The buyback price

Here's how the pricing works:

When you purchase a car I will give you a guaranteed price at which I will buy the vehicle back from you. Each month you keep the car the repurchase price reduces.

Premium vehicles:  At the end of one month I will refund 70% of the purchase price to you.  After two months the refund is 62.5% of the purchase price. At three months the refund is 50% of the purchase price.  For days in between full months the refund price is pro rata per day.

The maximum period covered by the buyback guarantee is six months.  After that we would have to come to a special arrangement.  Enquire for details.

Backpacker vehicles:  At the end of one month I will refund 65% of the purchase price to you.  After two months the refund is 50% of the purchase price. For days in between full months the refund price is pro rata per day.

Economy backpacker vehicles:  The buyback price is 50% of the purchase price. Prices range from $1500 to $3000.

Seasonal rates: On premium vehicles In the off-season (1 May to 31 Aug) your costs reduce by 35%. That means I either reduce the original purchase price or increase the refund . . . or a bit of both.

Where the use of the vehicle crosses the season boundaries you are charged only at the applicable seasonal daily  rate.  In other words, I'll give you the best deal possible depending on the season.

Finance

On Premium class cars you do not necessarily have to pay the whole purchase price on collecting the car.  We can arrange for you to buy on a deposit - usually about 60% of the purchase price.  There is a small charge to cover the interest payment -  2.0% of the outstanding balance per month which usually works out to somewhere between $60 and $100 a month.  If you subsequently sell the vehicle to another person the balance of the original purchase price must be paid.
