You are here:  Home -> Buybacks -> Long Term Buyback

Hiring a sleepervan for a lengthy holiday can be very expensive. The alternative is to buy it, with a guaranteed buyback.  I'll sell you a van and, if you want, when you are ready to leave, you sell it back to me at a pre-arranged price. But you are not required to sell it back - you a free to sell it to anyone who will give you a better price..

Long Term Buyback: This is the best option for someone who needs a vehicle for two months or more. Under this arrangement you buy the van off me at the full price. When you are finished with it you can either sell it to someone else, or bring it back to me and I will buy it back at the agreed buyback price. You can arrange your own insurance, or I can arrange it for you.  If you want breakdown insurance cover I can arrange that, too.

The only condition to the buyback is that the vehicle is in approximately the same condition as when I sold it. You are, however, free to sell it to anyone else if you can get a better price.

Important note:  These are not the sort of crappy old smokers and bangers that you see on hostel noticeboards or being peddled by dodgy unlicensed dealers at car fairs.

Of course you can buy a van for less, a lot less.  But then you have to drive it.  If you pay less than $3000 for a van you are just buying trouble, especially if you buy from a backpacker. They have absolutely no reason to spend any more money on the vehicle than is absolutely necessary to get around the country and off-load it on to the next unsuspecting buyer. If it does break down they usually get the cheapest possible patch-up job they can.  Their problem can become your problem very easily and by then they are far, far away.

My vans are good quality vehicles that have had a high quality fit-out and come with good quality equipment.

Vehicle Preparation

I am very careful about preparing the vans before you get them. Before a vehicle is handed over it is given a complete mechanical check. Any faults found that are critical to the safe and reliable operation of the vehicle are fixed. It is then given a complete service - oil change, new oil filter, new spark plugs, new distributor points, new air filter, etc. Finally it is tuned and set up to run efficiently and reliably.

The vehicles

I sell three grades of van:

Premium: mostly mid-90s to late 90s models. Less than 150,000kmon the clock.  They will be relatively newly fitted out and the equipment is all new or near new.  If it's an automatic, the transmission system is checked and serviced by Bakerfield Automatics.  If it's a diesel the engine will have been checked and serviced by Morrison Diesels. Both are top-class experts in their field.

It is then given an independent check by the AA and you will be able to see their report to reassure yourself that the vehicle is in good mechanical condition.

Backpacker: 1994-96 models with higher kms. They have probably done several trips around NZ and therefore the equipment and fit-out is older, but still in good working order.

Economy backpacker options:  In addition to the above vehicles we have a limited number of older (late 80s to early 90s) vans. Showing their age, but mechanically still sound and well maintained.  They have been thoroughly checked and serviced in our workshop and are ready for the road. The fit-out is usually simpler - just a bed deck in the rear compartment.  Prices range from $3000 to $4990.  A 14 day warranty is given.

Note: Regardless of the above definitions I reserve the right to grade a vehicle to a higher or lower standard depending on its physical condition.

All vans have been fitted out with a bed in the back, plus all the gear you need to set up camp, cook a meal, whip the top off a bottle of NZ wine and have dinner al fresco among some of the world's most stunning scenery.

In the back of each van is a built-in double bed with storage underneath.  Inside the rear door is a kitchen bench unit - even if it's raining you can prepare meals under the cover of the raised rear doorway. (May not apply in economy backpacker vans).

The bed is a full size double - 1350mm x 1900mm - none of the skimpy cramped-up squeezes you get in some vans.

Equipment:

Each van contains a three-burner gas cooker, electric chiller box, and utensil set which contains 2 pots, 1 fry pan, 4 plates, 4 cups, 4 side plates, 4 dessert plates, 4 mugs, bucket, plastic bowl, knives, forks, dessert spoons, teaspoons, can opener, vegetable knife, large kitchen knife, chopping board, egg slice, tea towels.

A mattress, pillows, pillow cases, sheets and a duvet are included.

Most vans have a 240v power supply from campground power sites, an onboard converter which converts 12v to 240v,  an additional 12v socket, and radio which also has an input socket for your iPod or MP3 player.

On economy backpacker vans:  Each van contains a two-burner gas cooker,  an insulated cooler, and utensil set which contains 2 pots, 1 fry pan, 4 plates, 4 cups, 4 side plates, 4 dessert plates, 4 mugs, bucket, plastic bowl, knives, forks, dessert spoons, teaspoons, can opener, vegetable knife, large kitchen knife, chopping board, egg slice, tea towels. A mattress, pillows, pillow cases and sheets.

Warranties

Premium vehicles: A 30 day warranty is given with all vehicles sold. This covers all mechanical breakdowns with the exception of damage caused by negligence or misuse of the vehicle.

Backpacker  vehicles: A 14 day warranty is given with all vehicles sold. This covers all mechanical breakdowns with the exception of damage caused by negligence or misuse of the vehicle.

Extended warranty:

If you wish you can then extend the above warranty for a further two months.  If you are a member of AA  or a related overseas motoring organisation the extended warranty will cost $2 a day.  If you are not a member of a motoring organisation like AA the cost is $3 a day.

On Backpacker vehicles there is there an excess (deductible) of $200 - in other words you must pay the first $200 of any repair.  The aim of this extended warranty is to protect you against major expensive repairs. No excess applies on Premium grade vans.

Insurance

Insurance is not mandatory in this country - you may drive without it. You may arrange for insurance cover yourself - but we can arrange insurance cover for you.  Cheapest option is "third party only"  which covers damage to anything you hit. "Third party, fire, and theft"  protects you against damage to any other vehicle, or the theft or burning of your van.  Or you can have comprehensive insurance that protects your vehicle and anything else you damage.

Third party only

Age of youngest driver:

3 months cover

6 months cover
18 to 21 $227.50 $255.63
22 to 24 $216.25 $250.00
25 and over $205.00 $227.50

The excess in each case is $500.  You can also include cover against fire and theft on your own vehicle  for an additional $50. Please contact us for further details.

Comprehensive Insurance

In addition to third-party only you can extend your insurance to cover damage to your own vehicle.  There are two options:

Buyback value:  Under this arrangement you are covered for up to the full amount of the agreed buyback price where damage is the result of a collision with another vehicle. Single vehicle crashes have an excess of $1500.  Note: You are still liable for the $500 excess on any third party claim.

Full purchase price value:  Under this arrangement you can claim up to the amount of the original purchase price. Excess on multi-vehicle crashes $500.  Excess on single vehicle crashes $1500.

Costs are given in $NZ per day.  Note:  These costs are in addition to the third party cover described above.

Age of youngest driver: Vehicles up to $6000 $6000-$10,000 $10,000 Plus
Buyback Full Buyback only Full Buyback only Full
18-21 years $2 $4 $4 $6 $6 $8
22-24 years $1.50 $3 $3 $4.50 $5 $7
25 years plus $1 $2 $2 $3 $4 $6

Warrant of Fitness And Registration

For any vehicle to be street legal, it must have a Warrant of Fitness (WOF) - a Government quality-assured safety test. It is one of the most rigorous safety tests in the world that must be passed every six months. In addition, all vehicles must be registered - i.e. pay the government another dollop of tax. All my vehicles are delivered with a current warrant of fitness and are registered.

Distance Limitations

Buybacks have a free km allowance of 6000km for the first month, plus 70km per day for the second month,  plus 50km per day from then on - more than enough for 99% of travellers. Most visitors will do 4500 to 6500km in two months. If you do manage to exceed the distance allowance we reserve the right to reduce the buy-back price by 20c per extra km.

The buyback price

Here's how the pricing works:

When you purchase a van I will give you a guaranteed price at which I will buy the vehicle back from you. Each month you keep the van the repurchase price reduces.

At the end of one month I will refund 70% of the purchase price to you.  After two months the refund is 62.5% of the purchase price. At three months the refund is 50% of the purchase price.  After that the refund  per month reduces by 5% of the original price.  For days in between full months the refund price is pro rata per day.

The maximum period covered by the buyback guarantee is six months.  After that we would have to come to a special arrangement.  Enquire for details.

Economy  backpacker vehicles:  The buyback price is 50% of the purchase price.

Finance

On selected vehicles you do not have to pay the whole purchase price on collecting the van.

I can arrange for you to buy on a deposit - usually about 50-60% of the purchase price.  There is a small charge to cover interest on the outstanding balance.   As a quick guide, based on a 60% deposit, the holding cost per month works out at less than 1% of the cost price.

One way travel:

For one-way travel between Auckland and Christchurch or vice versa, surcharges apply as follows:

For 31 days or less $400 extra.

For 32 to 45 days $300 extra.

For 46 days or more $250 extra.

The reason for these surcharges is that I am faced with the cost of transporting vehicles between cities at a cost of about $550.

Travel into or out of Wellington can also be arranged.  The surcharges are as follows:

For 31 days or less $250 extra.

For 32 to 45 days $200 extra.

For of 46 days or more $150 extra.
