You are here:  Home -> Buybacks -> Short Term Buyback

Hiring a sleepervan for a lengthy holiday can be very expensive. The alternative is to buy it, with a guaranteed buyback.  I will sell you a van and  when you are ready to leave, you sell it back to me at a pre-arranged price.

Important note:  These are not the sort of crappy old smokers and bangers that you see on hostel noticeboards or being peddled by dodgy unlicensed dealers at car fairs. They are checked and serviced and come with an inspection checksheet for you to see.

Short term buyback:  With this deal you buy the van on a deposit, collected in advance. At the end of the contractual period you sell it back to me. You do not have to pay the full price at the beginning of the contract. You pay a fee for the time you use the vehicle.  At the end of the deal you may just return the vehicle to me or complete the purchase of it. If you elect to buy it outright 50% of the fees already paid will be credited towards the purchase price.  The fee includes insurance, breakdown cover and tax.

Prices

The short, no crap answers.  This is what you pay - no last minute extras, no cute "documentation fees". This is it, unless you elect to take additional insurance cover (See below). Note: For prices between the 1 month / 2month / 3month rates, a pro rata daily rate applies. So if, for instance, you want a Backpacker Midivan for 40 days the price would be $2310 plus 10 days at $71 = $3020.  Easiest way is to ask me for a precise quote.

I sell two grades of van:

Premium: Mostly mid-90 to late 90 models. Less than 150,000km on the clock.  They will be relatively newly fitted out and the equipment is all new or near new.

Backpacker: 1994-96 models with higher kms. They have probably done several trips around NZ and therefore the equipment and fit-out is older.

Note:  the above definitions are subject to amendment if we think a particular van warrants a higher grade despite being outside these parameters

Very important: These are not luridly painted vehicles with dopey graffiti graphics that scream "tourists" from every panel. (I mean, would you want to drive around in a van that had "Blowjobs are a great last minute gift" written on the back?.  No kidding, that's on one of our competitors' vans!!).

Vehicle Preparation

I am very careful about preparing the vans before you get them. Before a vehicle is handed over it is given a complete mechanical check. Any faults found that are critical to the safe and reliable operation of the vehicle are fixed. It is then given a complete service - oil change, new oil filter, new spark plugs, new distributor points, new air filter, etc. Finally it is tuned and set up to run efficiently and reliably. If it's an automatic, the transmission system will have been checked and serviced by Bakerfield Automatics.  If it's a diesel the engine will have been checked and serviced by Morrison Diesels. Both are top-class experts in their field.

The vehicles

All vans are fitted out with a bed in the back, plus all the gear you need to set up camp, cook a meal, whip the top off a bottle of NZ wine and have dinner al fresco among some of the world's most stunning scenery.

In the back of each van is a built-in double bed with storage underneath.  Inside the rear door is a kitchen bench unit - even if it's raining you can prepare meals under the cover of the raised rear doorway.

The bed is a full size double - 1350mm x 1900mm - none of the skimpy cramped-up squeezes you get in some vans.

Equipment:

Each van contains a three-burner gas cooker, electric chiller box, and utensil set which contains 2 pots, 1 fry pan, 4 plates, 4 cups, 4 side plates, 4 dessert plates, 4 mugs, bucket, plastic bowl, knives, forks, dessert spoons, teaspoons, can opener, vegetable knife, large kitchen knife, chopping board, egg slice, tea towels.

A mattress, pillows, pillow cases, sheets and a duvet are included.

All vans have a 240v power supply from campground power sites, an additional 12v socket, and radio which also has an input socket for your iPod or MP3 player. I can also supply an onboard converter which converts 12v to 240v if required.

Insurance and repairs

All our compulsory buyback prices include basic insurance. The basic insurance package covers you for damage to your van or any other car, person or property with an excess (deductible) of $2000 - that is, you must pay the first $2000 worth of any damage.  You can reduce that excess if you wish.

On payment of a Collision Damage Waiver ("CDW") you can reduce the excess risk. This also provides full cover (no excess at all) on windscreens, headlights and tyre damage.

To reduce your excess to: Additional premium
$1000 $2 per day
$500 $3 per day
$200 $4 per day

Under 25 loadings.   If any of the drivers are aged between 18 and 21 there is an additional loading of $5 a day. If any of the drivers are aged between 22 and 24 inclusive the loading is $2 a day.

Any repairs required as a result of a breakdown are at our cost.  The exception is any repair caused by negligence, abuse or misuse of the vehicle.  Specifically we do not cover damage caused by overheating the engine.  It is your responsibility as a driver to be aware of engine conditions and if the temperature gauge indicates that the engine is excessively hot you should stop and seek assistance.

Warrant of Fitness And Registration

For any vehicle to be street legal, it must have a Warrant of Fitness (WOF) - a Government quality-assured safety test. It is one of the most rigorous safety tests in the world that must be passed every six months. In addition, all vehicles must be registered - i.e. pay the government another dollop of tax. All our vehicles are delivered with a recent warrant of fitness and are registered.

Camping Vans

These vans are also available in another configuration:  If there are up to seven of you, we take out the bed and put in extra seats behind the front row - leaving heaps of room in the back for camping gear - we'll also include one or two tents, your choice. For more details  go to our FamilyCamping Vans page.

Distance Limitations

Buybacks have a free km allowance of 7000km for the first month, plus 70km per day for the second month,  plus 50km per day from then on - more than enough for 99% of travellers. Most visitors will do 4500 to 6500km in two months. If you do manage to exceed the distance allowance I reserve the right to charge 20c per extra km.

Diesel power

Many of the vans are diesel powered. Diesel is cheaper than the price of petrol.  That is because there is no road tax charged on it at the pump. Instead we have to pay a tax for every km run.   We pass that tax on to the hirers - they are getting cheap fuel, but they must also pay the tax of 5.5c per km. (We also have to pay much higher registration charges - but you get that for free).  Even with the tax added, diesel is slightly cheaper than petrol. On average you'll do around 200km a day  - an extra $11 for road tax. Over two months or more that will drop to around  $6 a day.

One way travel:

For one-way travel between Auckland and Christchurch or vice versa, surcharges apply as follows:

For 31 days or less $400 extra.

For 32 to 45 days $300 extra.

For 46 days or more $250 extra.

The reason for these surcharges is that we are faced with the cost of transporting vehicles between cities at a cost of about $550.

Travel into or out of Wellington can also be arranged.  The surcharges are as follows:

For 31 days or less $250 extra.

For 32 to 45 days $200 extra.

For of 46 days or more $150 extra.

Early Purchase Discounts. Book and pay  in advance and get an extra discount as follows:
