FamilyCampingVans
If you
are travelling with a family you know how expensive it can be.
We've got
the answer to that - Family CampingVans.*
There are
three size options:
MidiVans: Short wheelbase versions of the
Mitsubishi Delica.
Manual and automatic transmissions. Petrol
and diesel powered. Maximum five persons.
MaxiVans:
Long-wheelbase, 2-wheel drive
"low rider" version of the
Mitsubishi Delica Spacegear. Automatic transmission. Longer
wheel-base means more room inside. Maximum seven persons.
MaxiVan-Fours:
4-wheel drive,
"high-rider" version of the
Mitsubishi Delica Spacegear. Automatic transmission. Maximum six persons
Very
important: These are not luridly
painted vehicles with dopey graphics that scream "tourists"
from every panel. (I mean, would you want to drive around in a van
that had "Blowjobs are a great last minute gift" written on
the back?. No kidding, that's on one of our competitors' vans!?) You'd never know that one of ours was
a tourist vehicle.
Even if
you don't have children this is a great way to travel for just one or
two people. You're up high - much higher than a car - so you get a
great view of the superb scenery outside.
You get all this - transport and accommodation
- from $30 a day in winter to $69 a day in high summer. You'd pay
more that for a motel unit on its own, without the transport!
If you are here for
three months or more the daily rate gets down to a mere $71 a day.
We include a complete camping pack with your choice
of one large two-room tent or two smaller tents (one for you, one for the
small brigade). You also get a complete camping pack specially
designed and chosen by my wife. When it
comes to living wild in the great outdoors
she's the ranking authority - she takes our four kids camping for three
weeks every year. And like any good husband I have taken
her excellent advice in selecting just the right equipment to make your
holiday camping experience as enjoyable and work-free as possible.
In that pack is
everything you need. to set up
camp, cook a meal, whip the top off a bottle of wine and have dinner
al fresco among some of the world's most stunning scenery.
Equipment:
Each van contains a three-burner gas cooker, electric chiller box, and utensil set which contains 2 pots, 1 fry pan,
kettle, 6 plates, 4 cups, 4 side plates, 4 dessert plates, 4 mugs, 4 tumblers,
two wine glasses, bucket, plastic bowl, knives, forks, dessert spoons,
teaspoons, can opener, vegetable knife, large kitchen
knife, chopping board, egg slice, tea towels. There is a picnic table
with four chairs. If you take the Maxi-Plus option because you have
more than four travelling we'll include extra equipment accordingly.
There's also
a Kathmandu camp kitchen - a folding bench for the cooker and
other equipment. It makes working and cooking so much easier
Inflatable
air mattresses, pillows, pillow cases, sheets and duvets or sleeping bags
(your choice) are included.
Tent layouts: We will tailor-make the tent
configuration to suit your family needs. For instance if you have one or
two
boys (or girls) one large two-room family tent will be fine. Or you
could have a smaller two-room tent for yourselves and a single room tent
for the kids. But if your family is a boy and a girl you'll
probably want them to have their own separate sleeping areas. No problem - two
two-bedroom tents will do the trick - one for parents, a smaller one for
children. The difference is mainly in the ease
and speed of erection. A small one-room tent takes less time - the
kids can usually do it themselves while you rig the parent tent.
Rates:
Costs for Family CampingVans are the same as for Sleepervans.

Diesel
power: I operate a number of diesel powered vehicles. Diesel
is cheaper than the price of petrol. That is because there is no
road tax charged on it at the pump. Instead we have to pay a tax for
every km run. We pass that tax on to the hirers - they are
getting cheap fuel, but they must also pay the tax of 5c per km. (We
also have to pay much higher registration charges - but you get that for
free). Even with the tax added, diesel is slightly cheaper than
petrol. On average you'll do around 200km a day - an extra $10
for road tax. On hires of two months or more that will drop to around
$6-8 a day.
One
way hires:
For one-way hires between
Auckland and Christchurch or vice versa, surcharges apply as follows:
For hires of 31 days or
less $400 extra.
For hires of 32 to 45 days
$300 extra.
Hires of 46 days or more
$250 extra.
The reason for these
surcharges is that we are faced with the
cost of transporting vehicles between cities at a cost of about $550.
Hires into or out of
Wellington can also be arranged. The surcharges are as follows:
For hires of 31 days or
less $250 extra.
For hires of 32 to 45 days
$200 extra.
Hires of 46 days or more
$150 extra.
